A fertility friendly diet is associated with:
• A 40% increased probability of success in achieving a pregnancy through IF, improving embryo
yield and number of fertilised eggs
• Significant improvements in sperm quality including, sperm count, sperm motility and sperm
concentration
• An increased probability of pregnancy
• Improvement in inflammation and insulin resistance in women with PCOS
• A reduced risk of ovulation disorders
Examples of important nutrients for fertility:
Folate reduces the risk of neural tube defects, may support progesterone levels and promotes healthy
ovulation, reduces miscarriage risk, important for production of DNA.
Antioxidants (vitamins C & E, zinc & selenium)- protect against oxidative stress which can impact fertility,
protect eggs and other cells from free radicals, increase chance of conception.
Omega 3 - anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, may improve egg quality, implantation and ART
outcomes.
Choline - helps maintain a normal pregnancy, reduces risk of neural tube defects, important for placental
function and early foetal brain development.
Vitamin B12 - inadequate levels associated with female infertility and low levels associated with
miscarriage.
