PCOS is a common and complex hormonal and metabolic disorder, affecting between 6-20% of women.

Weight and symptom management can be challenging for people with PCOS and no diet is superior - a personalised approach to dietary strategies, tailored to each patient and their symptoms is essential.

A focus on health (not weight) can be appropriate for more holistic, compassionate and effective care.

How can nutrition impact PCOS?
Scientific evidence shows that good nutrition can improve:

Cholesterol, triglycerides, blood sugar levels
Insulin Resistance
Cravings
Acne
Hirsutism
Fatigue
Disordered Eating thoughts and behaviours
Body fat
Nutrition deficiencies
Ovulation
Regular periods
Pregnancy outcomes
Body Image
Gut microbiome
Sleep
Stress and anxiety

There is not one optimal diet/lifestyle plan for PCOS that has been fully determined - this will be individualised for each person. Potential ways of eating include:
Low Glycemic Index
Low carbohydrate
Mediterranean/anti-inflammatory
Ketogenic/adapted Ketogenic

I am sympathetic that weight loss can be very hard for those with PCOS due to insulin resistance. Moderate weight loss (losing 5% of body weight) decreases circulating insulin levels and androgen concentrations improving symptoms such as menstrual cyclicity, spontaneous ovulation, and pregnancy. If you wish to lose weight, then we can work together using a variety of approaches.
Not all women with PCOS struggle with being overweight. Insulin resistance is still present in large proportion of cases.
There is evidence that some supplements can support women with PCOS e.g.
Myo-inositol
Omega 3
Co-enzyme Q10
